Site Management Safety Training Scheme (Classroom): FAQs

What should I expect?

An SMSTS classroom course delivers structured, face-to-face training over five days, led by an experienced CITB-approved instructor. You can expect interactive discussions, practical exercises, case studies, and group work covering legal responsibilities, risk management, and site safety, with ongoing support to prepare you for the final assessment.

What does the course cover?

The SMSTS course covers health and safety law, the responsibilities of site managers, risk assessments and method statements, accident prevention and reporting, and the management of high-risk activities.

It also focuses on leadership, communication, and effective site management to ensure compliance with CITB standards and maintain safe, well-run construction sites.

Who should take the classroom course?

The in-person course is best suited to site managers, project managers, and senior supervisors who are responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, and controlling construction work on site. It is particularly valuable for those who prefer face-to-face learning, benefit from classroom discussion and group exercises, or work in roles where SMSTS certification is a contractual or employer requirement.

How does the assessment work?

You’ll complete a multiple-choice exam, and practical assessments, at the end of the course. On passing, you’ll receive a CITB SMSTS certificate valid for five years, which must be renewed by completing an SMSTS Refresher before it expires.

What are the benefits of in-person training?

Taking SMSTS in person offers several benefits:

  • Hands-on learning: Practical exercises and group activities help you apply safety and management principles in real-world scenarios.

  • Networking opportunities: Interact with peers from other sites or companies, sharing experiences and best practices.

  • Confidence building: Face-to-face training can boost confidence in applying health, safety, and management skills on site.
